Covenants of God
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Theology
Scripture: But now hath he obtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant, which was established upon better promises. – Hebrews 8:6 (KJV)
The history of Scripture is a history of God’s covenants, and in Christ, we are recipients of a ‘better covenant’—a relationship based on His finished work rather than our imperfect efforts. Understanding this covenant changes our relationship with God from one of fearful performance to one of secure, child-like confidence. We are no longer trying to earn our standing; we are resting in the promises established by the blood of the Mediator, Jesus Christ.
This covenant provides the stability we need to relate to God as our Father. Because His promises are secured by Christ we can approach Him with the assurance that His love for us is unchanging and His plan for us is certain. Reflect today on the ‘better promises’ of the New Covenant; let them transform your prayers and your perspective moving you closer to the heart of the One who has committed Himself to you eternally.
Prompt: How does understanding God's covenant promises change the way you relate to Him?
Action Step: Sound Theology includes understanding the covenants God has made with His people throughout history.
Next Step: Thank God for the new covenant established through the blood of Jesus Christ.
