Centering Prayer

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. – Psalm 46:10

True stillness is a rare commodity in a culture defined by constant noise and demand. We are experts at bringing God our ‘to-do’ lists, but we are novices at simply sitting in His presence to ‘know’ Him. Centering prayer is the act of silencing the internal chatter—our anxieties, our agendas, and our requests—to focus entirely on the reality of God’s character. It is an act of humble surrender, acknowledging that He is God and we are not, and that His exaltation matters more than our petitions.

Can you carve out five minutes of absolute silence today? Don’t pray for your family, your work, or your problems. Simply sit in a quiet space, breathe, and silently acknowledge: ‘You are God.’ If your mind wanders to your stressors, gently bring it back to that simple truth. This practice of stillness is the ultimate act of worship; it aligns your heart with His sovereignty and prepares you to walk through the rest of your day with a calm, centered soul.

Prompt: How difficult is it for you to simply be still and silently acknowledge God’s presence without asking for anything?

Action Step: Practicing centering prayer trains our minds to quiet down and rest in the profound reality of God’s presence.

Next Step: Set a timer for 5 minutes today and sit in complete silence, focusing only on the phrase ‘Lord, You are here.’
