Bodily Discipline

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Practice

Scripture: But I keep under my body, and bring it into subjection: lest that by any means, when I have preached to others, I myself should be a castaway. – 1 Corinthians 9:27 (KJV)

We often treat our bodies as if they have the right to dictate our choices, letting our cravings, our exhaustion, and our feelings run the show. Paul, however, describes a life of mastery—bringing the body into subjection so that we can run the race with purpose. Discipline is not about self-punishment; it is about stewardship. It is ensuring that our physical vessels are fit instruments for the work God has prepared for us.

What habit is currently ruling you instead of you ruling it? It might be the way you use your sleep, the food you consume, or your lack of movement. Start today by making one small choice to deny your body’s impulse in favor of a higher purpose. By exercising self-control, you aren’t just getting healthier—you are positioning yourself to serve God with more clarity, endurance, and consistency.

Prompt: Does your physical body dictate your habits, or do you exercise self-control to serve God more effectively?

Action Step: The Practice of spiritual disciplines often involves bringing our physical appetites into submission to the Holy Spirit.

Next Step: Choose one physical comfort to deny yourself today as an act of devotion.
