Apologetics: Problem of Evil

Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Share

Scripture: And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. – Romans 8:28 (KJV)

When someone is in pain, the last thing they need is a cold theological lecture. The problem of evil is felt in the gut, not just the head. Our response must always start with empathy—with acknowledging that the world is broken and that pain is a reality that breaks God’s heart as well. Only after showing compassion can we gently point to the truth that God is the Master Weaver who is redeeming the brokenness of this world, not merely observing it.

Prepare your heart to be a listener today. If you encounter the ‘problem of evil’ question, don’t rush to ‘solve’ it. Say, ‘I am so sorry you are going through that; the pain in this world is real.’ Then gently point to the Cross—where God stepped into human suffering—and to the promise that He is working in ways we cannot yet see. Truth without compassion is abrasive; compassion without truth is shallow. Aim for both.

Prompt: When someone asks why a good God allows suffering, how do you respond with both truth and deep compassion?

Action Step: Sharing the Gospel requires us to thoughtfully and gently address the hardest questions people face, like the problem of evil.

Next Step: Pray for someone you know who is suffering and struggling to understand God’s goodness.
