Adoption into God’s Family
Discipleship S.T.E.P.S.: Theology
Scripture: For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. – Romans 8:15 (KJV)
The Gospel transforms us from subjects into children. The Spirit of adoption is the antidote to the spirit of fear that tells us we must perform to be loved. If you view God primarily as a judge, your worship will be marked by anxiety and your service by duty. But when you understand that you are adopted—legally, eternally, and lovingly—your relationship shifts into the intimacy of ‘Abba, Father.’ You belong to the family of God, and His love for you is based on His character, not your perfection.
Meditate on your status as a child of God today. If you have been living under the weight of condemnation, stop. Look at the Cross and see the cost He paid to bring you into His house. You are His. Rest in the security of that adoption and let it replace your fear with a deep, settled peace.
Prompt: Do you relate to God more as a distant judge or as a loving Father who has adopted you?
Action Step: Sound Theology reminds us that salvation brings us into an intimate, familial relationship with the Creator.
Next Step: Spend five minutes in prayer addressing God simply as ‘Father’ and thanking Him for choosing you.
