Ten Suggestions to be Intentional About Spiritual Growth

Incorporating spiritual growth into a busy schedule requires intentionality and creative integration of spiritual practices into your daily life.

Here are some practical strategies to help you stay consistent while nurturing your relationship with God:

1. Start Your Day with God

  • Morning Prayer: Begin your day by dedicating a few minutes to pray and thank God for the day ahead. Even 5–10 minutes can set the tone for your day.
  • Scripture Reading or Verse of the Day: Use a Bible app or devotional to focus on a short passage. Reflect on its meaning and how it applies to your day.
  • Meditation or Silence: Spend 2–5 minutes in stillness and invite God to speak to your heart.

2. Incorporate Scripture into Your Routine

  • Audio Bible or Podcasts: Listen to the Bible or a faith-based podcast during your commute, exercise, or morning chores.
  • Post-It Scriptures: Write meaningful Bible verses on sticky notes and place them in areas you frequently visit, like your desk, bathroom mirror, or kitchen.
  • Lectio Divina (Meditative Reading): Choose one verse to dwell on throughout the day by reflecting on its message and praying through it during spare moments.

3. Pray Throughout the Day

  • Breath Prayers: Use a simple phrase to align your heart with God during busy moments (e.g., “Lord, guide me” or “Your will, not mine”).
  • Set Prayer Times: Set small, specific moments during your day to pause and pray (e.g., lunchtime or a mid-afternoon break).
  • Pray Over Tasks: Before starting a new task or interaction, pray for wisdom, clarity, or guidance.

4. Practice Worship in Daily Activities

  • Worship Music: Listen to worship or Christian music during your commute or while doing household chores.
  • Gratitude Pause: At certain points in the day, intentionally stop and thank God for something specific—big or small.

5. Cultivate Fellowship

  • Accountability Partner: Reach out to a friend to check in on spiritual goals or share what you’re learning in your faith.
  • Small Group or Ministry Involvement: Attend or participate regularly in a church small group or community via virtual or in-person meetings.
  • Spiritual Friendship: Stay connected with spiritually encouraging friends for coffee dates, walks, or calls that include discussions about spiritual growth.

6. Embrace Solitude and Sabbath Rest

  • Small Moments of Solitude: Carve out short, quiet moments amidst your busy schedule for reflection or reconnecting with God.
  • Weekly Sabbath: Dedicate one day a week (or even part of a day) to rest from work or technology and focus on worship, rest, and gratitude.

7. Daily Service Opportunities

  • Acts of Kindness: Look for opportunities to serve others throughout your day (e.g., offering encouragement, helping a coworker, or showing kindness to a stranger).
  • Prayer for Others: Take a few minutes to pray intentionally for coworkers, family, or anyone God brings to mind.

8. Journaling or Reflection in Bite-Sized Chunks

  • Gratitude Journal: Write down 1–3 things you’re thankful for at the end of each day.
  • Spiritual Reflection: Briefly jot down where you saw God working or how He spoke to you during the day.

9. Steward Your Schedule Wisely

  • Plan Time with God: Add short spiritual practices (e.g., prayer or Bible reading) to your calendar like you would any other appointment.
  • Simplify Your Priorities: Identify and reduce commitments or distractions that hinder your spiritual growth.

10. Practice God’s Presence

  • Invite God into Every Activity: Throughout your day, remind yourself that God is with you in all you do. For example, while working, cleaning, or interacting with others, intentionally focus on doing it as an expression of love for God and others (Colossians 3:17).

By integrating these small habits into your existing routines, you’ll find that spiritual growth can happen naturally without overwhelming your schedule. Growth doesn’t always require large blocks of time but rather sustained, intentional practices that honor God in the small moments of daily life.
