The elements of Shape enable disciples to understand who God created them to be.
The SHAPE section of S.T.E.P.S. of Discipleship focuses on establishing a strong spiritual foundation, helping readers understand and embrace key principles critical to their journey as disciples of Christ. This section explores foundational elements such as salvation, holiness, and recognizing God’s plan for individual lives. Together, these principles equip believers to grow in their relationship with God, align their lives with His purposes, and cultivate a heart of obedience.
SHAPE serves as the starting point for the discipleship process. It emphasizes the necessity of salvation as the first step in reconnecting with God, restoring what was broken by sin. Through Jesus Christ’s sacrifice, believers are offered redemption and forgiveness, enabling them to enter a relationship with God (Ephesians 2:8-9, John 3:16). Furthermore, SHAPE highlights the importance of holiness as an ongoing process of transformation, calling believers to live set apart for God’s purpose, as He is holy (1 Peter 1:15-16, Romans 12:1).
This section directs readers to examine their faith and commit to intentional growth, laying the groundwork for the deeper theological understanding, practical training, and sharing of faith that follow in the STEPS framework. As disciples, nurturing this spiritual foundation ensures alignment with Ephesians 4:11-16, which calls believers to maturity, unity, and growth in Christ. By focusing on SHAPE, readers will be better prepared to fulfill their role in God’s greater plan for their lives and His Kingdom.
In determining our S.H.A.P.E. as a disciple, we need to know how God created us as unique individuals. Once we are saved and pursuing a holy relationship with God, through the Holy Spirit, He will reveal His will for our lives.
In determining our S.H.A.P.E. as a disciple, we need to evaluate our growth as a disciple. To be perfect, disciples need to be mature in all aspects of faith, knowledge, and practice. Although perfection may seem impossible, the Holy Spirit will help our weakness if we trust and obey His guidance.
